Why does it so often look like Russian men are raised to die in wars—so much that you even hear stories of guys being shot by their own side when they refuse or retreat? I’m not trying to farm outrage; I’m genuinely trying to understand this culture of “glorious sacrifice” over basic self-preservation.
Follow-up: is it actually possible to meet a Russian man who isn’t a doormat to the system, who values himself and his life, can say “no” to pointless orders, and chooses dignity over macho posturing? If you’re Russian (or know Russian communities abroad), what does that man look like in real life? How does he set boundaries with family or state, and what helps him keep his backbone education, community, therapy, something else?
Really, not trolling, just curious whether self-respect and staying alive can be the norm, not the exception.

Well, that happens than the current regime fails to convince it's soldiers that the enemy is worse than them. It's not really the norm you know.

We are not jihadist, people who go to fight in a war are not suicidal, they just know there is a probibility of them dying, but the survival of the group is more impotant.

A liberal than ? Yeah, most of the russian society is pretty liberal. Maybe even more than a western ones considering our reaction to the COVID pandemic. Everyone here is on there own, everyone tries to hustle themselves at a sun away from the praying eyes of the goverment.

Simple, he doesn't have a family. If you have a family goverment can pin you down with it. Can't have it. Of course, unless you a member of ethnical gang, but we are talking about russians as russkies, an ethnical group, right ?

Don't be a part of anything, isolate yourself. The more integrated you in a society in large, the more will they can impose over you.
